The Vowel Sounds /∂u/ and /o/

Unit 16; Part A

When you say the letters of the alphabet, О has the long vowel sound /∂u/. You hear this sound in the word note. But the letter Оis also pronounced as the short vowel sound /o/, as in the word not.

Important for listening!
In North America, the sound /o/ is replaced by /a:/. Forthis reason, the following words may sound similar if an Englishspeaker says the first word and an American speaker says the secondword:
part - pot, heart - hot, shark - shock, barks - box.
