  • When the vowel sound /oi/ is before L, e.g. oil, boil, soil, many speakers put the vowel /∂/ between them. You may find it easier to say it this way.
  • When the vowel sound /aυ/ is before R or L, many speakers put the vowel /∂/ between them, so hour rhymes with shower, and foul rhymes with towel.
  • Listen to these words with the R pronounced, as in North America:
hour,   power,    shower,    flour,    flower,    tower

Exercises
