The consonant sounds /b/ and /p/

Unit 3; Part A

When you say the alphabet, the letters В and P have the sounds /bi:/and /pi:/.
In words, they have the consonant sounds /b/ and /p/.

Look at the mouth diagram to see how to make these sounds:

Listen to the sounds /b/ and /p/.
The mouth is in the sameposition for both sounds, however in rhe sound /b/ there is voice fromthe throat.
In /p/, there is no voice from the throat.
Instead, thereis a small explosion of air when the lips open.

Now listen to the sound /b/ on its own.

Exercises

1 Write the letter b or p in each gap.

First read this conversation to the end, and then write the letter 'b' or 'p' in each gap.
Listen and check your answers.
Sid:   Where are the   p ears?
Joe:    _ears?!!! Did you say _ears?
Sid:    No, _ears, you know, fruit!
Joe:    Oh, I see, _ears with a P! They're in the _ack.
Sid:    What, in the _ack of the truck?
Joe:    No, in the _ack, you know, with a P!
Sid:    Oh, I see, _ack with a P! Would you like one?
Joe:    No, I'll have a _each, please.
Sid:    A beach?!!!

Follow up: Play the recording again, pausing itafter each of Sid's lines. You say Joe's lines before listening to himsaying them.

2 Reverse the sounds in the words and write the new word.

The word ape contains the two sounds /ei/ and /p/. If you reverse the sounds, you get the word pay /pei/. Reverse the sounds in these words and write the new word.

3 Underline the words where b or p is not pronounced.

Listen. In one word in each group, the 'b' or 'p' is not pronounced. Underline the word.

4 Listen and tick the sentence you hear,

Follow up: Record yourself saying the sentences in4, choosing sentence A or B. Make a note of which you say. Then listento your recording in about two weeks. Is it clear which sentences yousaid?
